Matching Wedding Rings for Couples: How to Choose

Wedding rings don't have to be identical to count as matching. For most couples, "matching" means choosing the same finish or metal and wearing it at your own width - her ring might sit at 4mm or 6mm, his at 6mm or 8mm - rather than two rings that are exactly the same in every way. Here's how to choose together without either of you compromising on what you actually want.

The mistake worth avoiding

The most common thing we see is one partner giving up their own style to match the other's. If she wants a wedding ring with a floral engraving, for example, that's not usually a look a man would choose for himself - and we do see men going along with it anyway, just to keep things matching, rather than saying what they'd actually prefer. Matching works best as a shared decision on finish and metal, not one partner's taste overriding the other's.

When it's better not to match

Sometimes a couple's tastes are genuinely too far apart to make matching work - one of you wants a black ring, the other wants a traditional polished gold tungsten ring. When that's the case, it's usually better to each choose the ring you'd pick on your own rather than compromise into something neither of you is quite happy with. You can still shop from the same collection and land on two completely different rings.

Getting both your sizes right

It's tempting to assume you're a similar size to your partner if your hands look similar, but ring sizes rarely match up exactly even then - it's worth each of you measuring your own size rather than guessing from the other's hand. It's worth getting right the first time, too: tungsten rings generally can't be resized once they're made, and titanium only has limited scope for it. Measuring properly before you order saves either of you having to exchange for a different size later.

Earlier this month, a customer got in touch asking about matching options for her and her partner.
